Mayo Clinic Diet, which has spread like wildfire is responsible for millions of people in losing weight, has nothing to do with the Mayo Clinic health center and hospital in Rochester, USA. The origins of the Mayo Clinic Diet still remain unknown even though the Mayo clinic diet was conceived 30 years ago.

This Mayo Clinic Diet did not originated or never been approved by the Mayo Clinic. The Mayo clinic diet appears in many forms. Grape fruit, which is always high in protein and low in carbohydrates, is the one main characteristic to a Mayo Clinic Diet.

The Working Of Mayo Clinic Diet:

The key behind the Mayo Clinic Diet is that it actually a low carbohydrate diet plan, which will result in losing weight quickly. Grape fruit is utilized by the Mayo Clinic diet at each meal as a means of encouraging your body to burn fat.

Junk mail, word of mouth, faxes and the Internet have perpetuated knowledge of the Mayo Clinic diet. There is no official Mayo Clinic Diet. But most versions of the Mayo Clinic Diet are of high protein and high fat.

The Mayo Clinic Diet is usually three to seven days in duration. You are allowed to eat an unlimited amount of grapefruit, meat and poultry, when you are on the Mayo Clinic Diet. Meat and fat are used by the Mayo Clinic diet to stop hunger, and insist that eating more fat in your diet will actually results in weight loss.

“Eating fat allows your stomach to feel full, which results in a reduced appetite” is the actual concept followed by the Mayo Clinic Diet. You can actually eat fried foods and as much meat as you want when you are on the Mayo Clinic diet.

Food items supported by Mayo Diet Plan

The Mayo Clinic Diet plan supports you to have White onions, potatoes, celery, peas, cereal, carrots, corn, starchy vegetables, bread, noodles, rice, potato chips, pretzels or fruit or diet dressing.

Food items not supported by Mayo Diet Plan

The Mayo Clinic Diet plan does not allow you to have red onions, bell peppers, radishes, broccoli, cucumbers, green onions, leaf spinach, cabbage, tomatoes, green beans, lettuce, chili (no beans) mayonnaise, any cheese, hot dogs, cole slaw, regular salad dressing, green vegetables, 1tsp nuts, dill or bread and butter pickles.

A Mayo Clinic Diet:

BREAKFAST:

  • Black coffee or tea, no sugar
  • 2 Slices of bacon
  • 2 Eggs any style
  • 1/2 grapefruit or 8oz unsweetened juice.

LUNCH:

  • Meat
  • Salad and or raw veggies
  • 1/2 grapefruit or 8oz unsweetened juice.

DINNER:

  • Meat
  • Vegetables
  • Black coffee or tea, with no sugar and
  • 1/2 grapefruit or 8oz unsweetened juice.

BEDTIME:

  • 8oz Tomato juice or skim milk (Which is optional)

Mayo Clinic Diet Tips:

  1. The grapefruit is important because it acts as a catalyst that starts the burning process.
  2. Eat till you are stuffed. The more you eat the more weight you will lose.
  3. Drink 8 glasses of water daily.
  4. Do not eliminate anything from the diet, especially don't skip the bacon at breakfast or omit salads. It is the combination of foods that burn the fat.
  5. At any meal you may eat until you are full, and you cannot eat anymore. You must eat the minimum listed at each meal.
  6. Don't eat in between meals; if you eat the combination of food suggested, you will not get hungry.
  7. Do not eat desserts, breads and white vegetables of sweet potatoes. You may double or triple helpings of meat, salads or vegetables.
  8. Cut down on coffee, it affects the insulin balance that hinders the burning process. Try to limit to one cup each meal.
  9. There may be no weight loss in the first 4 days, but you may lose 5 pounds on the 5th day. You may lose 1 and 1/2 pounds every two days until you reach your goal.
  10. The diet may eliminate sugars and starches. Fat does not form fat, it helps burn it, so you can fry food in butter and use butter generously on vegetables.
  11. All soft drinks need to be diet and caffeine free.

Against:

  • Unlimited consumption of anything high in fat is dangerous
  • Can result in fatigue and lack of concentration
